I can think of a lot of things that have happened to me this semester that could be considered the “best” but choosing just one I’m going to say my dream journal. I’ve always been interested in starting one, but this class helped me to pursue that, and now I have begun to understand my dreams and to remember them.
The “worst” thing that has happened to me this semester would maybe be my hookah. I love smoking sheesha, but the more I do, the closer it brings me back to smoking cigarettes (which I still think about, even though I quit over a year ago). So maybe its either both or none? I guess I’ll find out.
One significant lesson I have gleaned so far this semester would be:
The mistake I made on my first GD2 assignment, and how I have now come to understand what my teacher is looking for in my work and myself that has helped me achieve a much better grade on my second assignment. He helped me to strive deeper into my work, and to come up with more better ideas that will help me with my work in the future.

One thing that I have recently read involves blind people and dreams. The question on the blog I was reading was about how blind people dreamt. The answer was that if a person could see before they became blind, then in there dreams they were able to see things up to that point. If a person was born blind, there dreams were more sensory. I also found out about this syndrom called Bonnet Syndrom, which is something that some people who lost their vision but once had it may undergo. For some reason these people begin having these incredibly vivid hallucinations described as the most “powerfully delicious images that literally drip with color.” Basically what it is is that these blind people can see things that only people tripping on drugs like shrooms can see. Pretty cool I think.

Interesting Work of Art

The most interesting work of art that I have seen this semester would probably have to be the “There Will Be Blood” movie poster in a bus bench in East Franklin Ave. This poster drew me in because the typeface was written in a bright contrasting blood red. I also found the typeface to be very intriguing too. I think that this will affect my own work because I won’t be so afraid to start using really bright colors with my type to help it stand out on the posters I make. If I were to make a piece of work reacting to this one I would probably make another poster with the same sort of contrast that the “There Will Be Blood” poster has.

Speakers

Of all of the speakers that have come to MCAD this semester, the only one that really sticks out in my mind is Mike Perry. This person’s talk really captivated me because of how “truthfull” it seemed. He basically said that no matter what, if you put your mind to it and work hard you can go anywhere. It seemed that even though he didn’t really know where he was going out of college, he always just took life as it came and jumped at every opportunity. His lecture applies to my career because he is a graphic designer/typographer and I am majoring in graphic design so it is nice to hear about things going on in the “outside world” from the point of view of someone that has been there and lived in it. He was also one of the first people that made it seem easy to create type by hand which was something that I have wanted to create with my work for awhile.

Projects

One project that I have done during this symester that I would want to start over again would be my “collage” project for graphic design II. I would want to start it over again from the beginning with a stronger idea and focus on what I wanted to create for my poster. I think this would help me get better at resolving my ideas for a project in my GD class and in others.

“Happy” accidents

There have been many errors, missteps, and mishaps that have happened in each of my classes this symester.
Some things that have tripped me up in my graphic design II class have been the feedback I get from my teacher. It’s very hard to understand, so therefore, if i’m not on the same “wavelength” as him I don’t do as good of a job on an assignment. Another class that I’ve had some mishaps in has been documentary film. In this class I’ve had some trouble making time to go see the required movie that plays every sunday at the school. In Ideation I’ve had some trouble because I fell behind when I got sick with the flu one week, and I’m trying to catch up. For photo class I’ve had some trouble with my film, Last week I had some scratches on my film, which I am resolving by retaking my photos.
In my documentary film class I haven’t really had too much trouble, finding time to watch the homework documentaries can be a bit difficult sometimes. Sophomore seminar is probably the easiest class I’m in right now, no trouble or mishaps there. I’ve learned that I need to plan out my week accordingly so I can fit everything in, and get all my homework done. I try to keep a tabs on my computer of all the things I need to do during the week, which seems to work out fine.

Accomplishments

Currently I am enrolled in six classes this spring semester at MCAD. They are:
Hollywood Musicals
Ideation and Process
Graphic Design II
Intro. Photo
Documentary Film
Sophomore Seminar
My best accomplishments for my hollwood musicals class is probably just the fact that I am able to learn about the start of musicals, the famous actors of the time, and just what was involved in hollywood musicals at the time.
For ideation and process my best accomplishments are the fifteen minutes a day I spend brainstorming ideas, painting, and working on posters, because those are things that I love to do.
For graphic design II my accomplishments right now are being on the right track in the class and creating a magazine insert for raves.
Intro. Photo, my accomplishments are going out to places that I’ve always wanted to photograph using a 35mm camera, and finally learning how to develop film and print.
For Documentary film, my accomplishments are understanding the work that is put into creating a documentary, and watching them.
In sophomore seminar, I would say that my accomplishments are what I get out of the artist presentations and being able to interpret those into my own life, and how I am going to approach my future.
Altogether I feel like, though its been very draining, I have been learning a lot of valuable information in all of my classes this semester. I have fallen behind in a few of my classes because of the amount of time each class takes up in my life. I guess I don’t really have any triumphs outside of school, maybe achieving a new level in the super mario game, or oblivion game I’m playing…

Crashing to earth

Another form of space debris is that which reenters the earth’s atmosphere and is recovered on the ground. For people living on earth, being hit by a piece of space trash is highly unlikely. Thousands of satellites and rockets have reentered the atmosphere and only a relative few have been found intact or in pieces, the effects of space debris can have an impact on ground based astronomical observations. Almost every satellite that encounters the atmosphere (unless it is designed to resist the heating of reentry) will either be partly or completely destroyed and will certainly not reenter. An exception is the Space Shuttle. Forces and heating during the process are such that man-made objects will have a hard time surviving the length of time, peak heating temperatures, and pressures involved in the high velocity encounter. When part of a satellite does survive it can take many unexpected forms. All kinds of mechanical, electrical, pieces of paper, clothes and even some human body parts were recovered; many were in ‘recognizable condition’.

Space debris has become a growing concern in recent years, since collisions at orbital velocities can be highly damaging to functional satellites and can also produce even more space debris in the process, called Kessler Syndrome. The Kessler Syndrome is a scenario in which the volume of space debris in Low Earth Orbit is so high that objects in orbit are frequently struck by debris, creating even more debris and a greater risk of further impacts. The implication of this scenario is that the escalating amount of debris in orbit could eventually render space exploration, and even use of satellites. Every satellite, space probe and manned mission has the potential to create space debris. As the number of satellites in orbit grow and old satellites become obsolete, the risk of a cascading Kessler Syndrome becomes greater.

Main Focus

Hey all,
I’ve decided to narrow down my focus on space down to one main catagory, space trash.
Like I’ve mentioned before, space trash, also known as space debris, orbital debris, and space waste, are objects in orbit around Earth created by humans, that no longer serve any useful purpose. They consist of everything from entire spent rocket stages and defunt satellites to explosion fragments, paint flakes, dust, and slag from solid rocket motors, coolant released by nuclear powered satellites, and other small particles.
